Aaachooo! Cloth Tissue?

My family is down sick. It’s one of those head colds where all those hot teas and orange juices seem to bypass your stomach in order to head straight to your nose. And, as you can imagine, the tissue pile can quickly grow to gargantuan proportions.

So, I’ve decided that today for my zero waste challenge, I will begin addressing the disposable tissue issue. (See what I did there? I’m hilarious when I’m sick!) I’ve taken out my sewing machine, an old cotton sheet, and all my sewing bits and bobs. I’m working on loads of small blue squares of approximately the same size with nice little hemmed borders. When I get a stack, I’ve got a nifty folding technique that allows me to simulate the paper tissue pop-up.

I’ve finished three tissues and will continue to plug away at this project as this challenge continues, building my store until the old sheet is entirely used up.

These look fabulous, by the way, like little Mona Lisas that you blow your nose on.

How About You?

Does being sick mean small forests perish? Or have you already figured out to cut your impact? What tricks do you wish to share? Please post your ideas in the comments below!

Until next time, keep that talk walking!

Awesome! I buy wash clothes or make them from old towels to use for wiping counter tops instead of using paper towels. I use them with my swifter, so no more waste using disposable swifter paper/wipes. Washes easily. All gets tossed in hot cycle. They are great for blowing noses too! It’s great you are looking at things differently for a better world for you. 🙂

I can’t believe I ever used anything other than handkerchiefs to be honest! Chloe x

It’s really amazing how quickly you get used to new habits! Go you! How many handkerchiefs do you recommend a person have?

I had an old tshirt that was a bit too scruffy to donate so I just cut it up, hemmed some of my cut up pieces (before getting bored and leaving the rest with rough edges…) and have been surviving with that many. Ask me again next time I get a cold though!
